Scott's Top 10 FREE Software

Well I'm gonna cheat and divide it half Windows, half Ubuntu/Linux. A little something for everyone *shrugs*. Linkies are complimentary. Enjoy dear internet readers (if there are people who actually read or otherwise).

Windows
1) Foobar2000
LINK
WIKI
By far, my favorite music player for Windows (haha had to recently redefine it to my now broader usage of OS's). Highly tweakable interface and output. and has superior sound quality. WMP? iTunes? Foobar2000 FTW!

2) μTorrent
LINK
WIKI
Download much? Want less resources to use (aka light footprint)? Want control over the use of a BT client (disable DHT, encryption, set max ups and downs and # of peers/connections - aka not killing your home router). Look no further. :)

3) IMGBurn
LINK
WIKI
Hate the bloat that Nero has become lately? Hate Nero wasting your precious Taiyo Yuden Japanese disc media? Want something free and simple and works? Give this thing a shot. I love it to bits (and no more wasted discs).

4) Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP)
LINK
WIKI
I absolutely love this codec pack. It will pretty much allow you to play all the videos file formats (dual audio, subs, etc) right through Windows Media Player. Unlike some, I actually really love WMP 11. I don't like other players (Zoom, WMP Classic, etc) for Windows. CCCP allows me to keep using it (there is a full installation minus players options during install - and make sure to force Haali Media Splitter by checking the box). Watch in peace my brethren.

5) Mozilla Firefox
LINK
WIKI
You think I would forget my favorite browser? Firefox is probably a prime example of the best of what the freeware/open source community can do for multiple platforms. It is a true success story. How successful? Well about ~21% market share (second behind Microsoft's Internet Explorer) worth. But at least there is some friendly competition going on between number one and number two (doesn't appear to be as ugly as the IE vs Netscape from a way back when). So nice infact, that they got not one, but two cakes from the IE Dev team. Aww... :)

Honrable mentions: CutePDF, 7-zip, CPU-z (VERY narrowly edged out), Exact Audio Copy (number 1 ripping tool. Forget the rest, make sure to rip in FLAC... :p ).

Whew!

Ubuntu
The links may or may not work (and may not matter for the matter). Regardless, look them up in your respective package manager. I somehow don't think this half will be too challenging though (hey everything is open source right?). Though please go easy on me, I have just had Ubuntu for like 3 days LMAO.

1) Ubuntu itself
LINK
WIKI
Hahaha. What can I say? It is free. And it totally saved a good part of the day for my friends today. Stuff worked as soon as it was installed. Everything from my sound, to my WiFi, to the battery meter, to the volume control buttons on the laptop just worked. And, it comes included with #2.

2) Mozilla Firefox
LINK
WIKI
Hahaha. Included with the Ubuntu version I have (8.10). Cross platform FTW!

3) BMPx
LINK
WIKI
This is so far my favorite player for Ubuntu. Hey, it includes built in Last.fm support (for my scrobbling, I need a separate client for my main Vista x64 machine). Plays my preferred audio format (FLAC - anyone who really knows me, knows that I am a BIG FLAC nut - a requirement for everything I use that involves digital music playback). And most importantly for a big Ubuntu/Linux n00b, support for a mounted music folder (that is in NTFS - though that partly is due to the NTFS File Configurator I have installed too I suppose), built in lyrics download (you can view details of the song and grab the lyrics. About everything I'd want right now (as a Ubuntu n00b). Though it doesn't really have the level of tweaking that I am used to with Foobar2000. Probably the only downside I see. Amarok seems to be a decent player (tons of stuff to mess with) but for the life of me, can't seem to figure out how to get it to see my mounted NTFS folder. Need something that 'Just Works' for now. I guess I really should give hydrogenaudio.org a visit. But, on the flipside, this is a ancient relic of a machine with uber old pre Intel High Definition Audio onboard sound. Meh, will probably just stick with BMPx I suppose. That or listen to my FLAC Trekstor Vibez seperately.

4) MPlayer
LINK
WIKI
This is one of the best players I've tried. I currently have VLC installed as well as the included Movie Player with Ubuntu. This one seems to just be more willing to play the various video containers I have (with all of the GStreamer codecs I downloaded that is). So I am reasonably comfortable putting this and number 4.

5) Screenlets
LINK
WIKI
I love having widgets on the right side of the screen. I use it a lot in Vista and I totally love the ones in the Windows 7 Beta. So here I was wondering if there was anything I could use on Ubuntu, and I ran across a mention of Screenlets. Sure there are other alternatives but I tried it and liked it so done. Hahaha! Now I get my CPU, RAM, Swap file, CPU Temperature, and local weather (also have it on the top 'taskbar'). Happy me.

Honorable Mentions: tons of others, just go look coz that's what I'm doing too. :o

If you guys would like to chime in on anything that you felt needs a mention anywhere, feel free to drop a comment. :)

Top 10 things that piss me off instantly

I promised this a post or two ago. :) So here it is! :)

The top 10 things that piss me off the most (usually almost instantly). But before you read on, please know that I have the patience of a saint (cool as a cucumber baby!). I am very accepting and not all of these will set me off immediately. My instant is not as abrupt as 'normal' people's. Let's just say that it is the only time you will see my composure affected. I don't generalize or give blanket situations. With that said, here they are in no particular order.

1) Ignorance
I am a firm believer that ignorance takes effort. Mistakes are fine. Shit happens. But being ignorant requires some effort from the party involved. Why one would devote resources to being a fucktard is beyond me. People like this proves that natural selection does miss some people.

2) Improper parking
Nothing pisses me off more than a car that can't freaking stay in it's own box. Jeez. At least have some freaking consideration (aka concept of other people). I love how they park like a moron, look at me and then get out like nothing is wrong. Again relate to #1. Kindly take a long walk off of a short pier.

3) Cruelty
You don't deserve to be called a human if you treat other living beings like crap. Being mean I guess I can understand. But it takes one hell of a vile blackened heart to be an absolute monster to everything. Do us a favor and kindly stop breathing.

4) Indecisiveness
Wait which want did you want? What? Where? How? Who? When? Can't make up your mind? Kindly dispose of it kthx. I am a man of conviction. Though I do have my lazy moments, I stick to my guns always and carry things out.

5) Power Trips / Supremest
Just because you have a shred of power over another, suddenly you are king. Hah. Experience has shown me you will never climb very high. I chose to be humble in everything.

6) Forcing / Coercion
I react with a LOT of hostility when I am 'forced' to do something. This stems from my free spirited nature. I tend to willfully and purposely ground myself to somethings (in the past to a GF - to de-horn me so to speak). Freedom is something I value, but bounds is something I stay within. If ever there is anything, ask me. Don't try and be a douche and order me. I always respect authority, but I dislike Authoritarians (there is a stark difference). I would surprise you with my knack of making every single thing from that point onwards a royal pain in the ass. Bottom line, you couldn't make me do anything. Like I said, ask me. I am super duper nice. Most often then not, I would comply if you ask me. Start out trying to force me? Well I will make your efforts a living hell. :) Also for the love of God, do not try to commit me to something on your behalf ("Oh I promised this person that you would help them out so go help them" - go stick something up where the sun don't shine). A better approach would be "Oh I know someone that could help you, lets go ask him". More often than not, I would be more than thrilled to help (I love being nice and I love helping out!). So yeah. Ask me to help and I probably will, make me help and no.

7) Respect (lack of that is)
I am very respectful of everything/everyone. While I am a firm believer that respect is earned, not given, for people who are still neutral in my book, they still receive a lot of it from me.

Though the notion of respect doesn't only limit itself to the topic of people. It is also with one's belongings. When I borrow or use someone's belongings, I treat it better then if it was my own. While I never impose my ways on others, I do at the very least hope that people who use my stuff to take good care of it. Many times have I lent my prized belongings to others only to have them returned in a less then subpar standard.

8) Punctuality
I am a very punctual person. Now in today's hustle and bustle, keeping to schedules on a daily basis is hard. That I know. But it's not the short falls that makes a man. It's what he does to correct it. If I am late I will do my best to notify the other party at least three times. First when I know I will be or could be running late. Second is when I am already late. Finally is when I am late and about to arrive. Each occurrence is updated with an ETA. Why do I do this? It's called courtesy. I always set expectations.

There is this one term I hate with a passion. Amongst our ethnic group (well at least half of my bloodline) they jokingly call it a 'promise'. In that context, it is an admission and expectation that people should always be late. That I hate. Mention that to me when I am the waiting party and you will get me riled up. It is one thing to be late but it is another to say it is to be expected. It is also another all together to not show up and say nothing of it.

I can't think of any more right now. Haha! Not a lot pushes my buttons so to speak. :p

Someone once told me, I tend to bite my lip if something is bugging me. Warning sign! LOL jking.

Friday, March 14, 2008

You know you have Fridayitis when....

I speak from vast experience...

1) You wake up late for work / wake up thinking it's Saturday.
2) You sit down and stare at the screen blankly.
3) Make retarded mistakes on huge transfers (oh just 32 tons worth of material thats not supposed to be there yet but was transferred in on the ERP).
4) Think of donuts downstairs instead of deadlines.
5) Can't stop thinking of what you're going to do after you get off.
6) Need more sleep! (nuff said?)
7) Chat up with co-workers 15 mins after you just turned on the computer.
8) Too lazy to do anything (like get a bowl for your cereal so u just dump it into your glass of milk and try to drink it).
9) You meet another co-worker say hi and both sigh and slump at the same time and both utter "umm... yeah" at the same time, you know you have an epidemic on your hands (or at least your floor).
10) Your co-workers want to get plastered after work.
11) I'm posting crap here.
12) Ate way too much for lunch.

Honorable mentions: Trance and Metal have no effect on you. Sugar and Caffeine have no effect on you. You see a friend go through 4 boxes of cereal, a bagel, and 2 donuts in the morning.
